2011 Adopt A Family has been a HUGE Success !!!
Thank You to all the donors that made it possible!!!
The holiday wish list takes on a new and more sobering meaning for the 2011 NY Disaster Relief Adopt-a-Family program. It is not about the latest video game or the hot new pair of boots, it is about asking for everyday things that might make life a little easier for these recent flood Victims.
Many of the Adopt-a-Family wish lists read ‘anything would be helpful’ while others focus on mundane items like ‘gas cards, cleaning supplies, gift cards for groceries.’ Another regular request is for an activity or game that family members can do together.
Since Aug 28, 2011 many families have struggled with their personal loses from Hurricane Irene. Shortly after on Sept. 7, 2011 Tropical Storm Lee made its presents known and caused more devastation to this already hurt area. Some lost everything, others had devastating damages to repair. With little available help and a cap of just about $30K from FEMA for repairs, families are finding the holidays to be a grim future event instead of a joyous time. NY Disaster Relief and Armlins Army are working closely to provide these families HOPE. Our HOPE stands for Help Other People Exist. It sounds sad but very real in these effected areas. Please pay it forward today by sponsoring a needy family that may not have a holiday with out your help. NY Disaster Relief is looking at nearly 100 families that need sponsorship. The Adopt-a-Family program will help bring a bit of holiday cheer to families after the worst devastation this area has ever seen. This year the program will provide gifts for 100 families, including more than 300 plus children and adults. For many, the items that the participants receive through NY Disaster Relief are the only gifts that their family will receive for the holidays.
The Adopt-a-Family program relies on donations and support from many local businesses, organizations, religious institutions, social groups and private donors.
This year, we expect more than $20,000 will be raised/expending on gifts for children alone. At this time, adopters are still needed for more than 75 families, ranging from two to nine relatives. Adopters can make cash donations or be matched with a family’s wish list by contacting NY Disaster Relief's @ www.nydisasterrelief.org or call the Program Manager Kim Vescova at 518-657-1114
